Cement board is by far the heaviest type of drywall used in tile wall applications and the most resistant to water. Look into cement board if you need waterproof drywall. While it may be heavy installing cement board is just like installing drywall with a few minor differences. Be cognizant that cement board requires a moisture barrier behind it which makes the installation process longer than moisture resistant drywall.

Tear the drywall out all the way back to the studs. We utilized the same thin set that will be used to attach the tiles. For starters the cement backerboard will need to be cut to the proper dimensions with a jigsaw. Cement backer board is mainly used as a sub surface for tiling.

Drywall concrete backer board there are two standard drywall type materials that you should use in your bathroom. Standard sheets of drywall are made from a core of gypsum sandwiched between layers of paper. This type of drywall is covered with fiberglass instead of paper which protects the gypsum board from rot and offers even greater resistance to mold and mildew. Paperless drywall has been replacing paper drywall. The quality of the board is a little tougher than regular drywall but some construction pros find it easier to cut.

Having the cement board alkali resistant screws joint tape and mortar will get you one step closer to installing the tub surround the right way. This type of waterproof drywall is designed for wet areas such as showers and bathtub surrounds. Instead of using drywall joint compound to embed the tape in the cement board you should use thin set mortar. This type of wallboard is the most common material used on walls in home construction.

Ideal for bathrooms basements kitchens laundry rooms and utility rooms. The level of humidity is just too high to depend on standard drywall used in the rest of your home. Regular drywall is not appropriate.
